PD Ports welcomes four new RTG cranes to Teesport

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 19, 2011 - The four new RTG (rubber-tyred gantry) cranes delivered to Teesport today are a key component of the current £16.7million expansion of the container terminals at Teesport and represent the biggest single equipment investment in the port since the container terminal opened in 2003.

The Konecranes RTGs, manufactured in Finland and Poland for a total investment of around £5 million, are the first of their type to be supplied by Konecranes in the UK and will allow garbage compactor review PD Ports to significantly improve handling capacity on the Teesport Container Terminal as volumes continue to grow.

"By switching from the current handling system using reachstackers to these RTGs we can store many more boxes on the same area, due to their ability to create higher, wider container stacks," says Mark Pearson, PD Ports Project Director. "They also improve the number of containers handled per hour." The 16-wheel RTGs have a lifting capacity of 50 tonnes and can stack 1-over-5 containers high and 6 plus truck lane wide.

Teesport's container terminals saw volumes increase by 45% in 2010 and capacity is currently being expanded from 235,000 to 450,000 TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit), the standard measurement for sea containers. The company's overall strategy is to expand port wide capacity to at least 650,000 TEU so further improving employment security for the current 500+ Teesport employees, and potentially creating new opportunities for additional employment, especially important at a time when the local and national economies remain under serious pressure to create jobs.

The RTGs, which were purchased after a rigorous selection process, are fitted with the latest Konecranes fuel saving system and have been designed to take future environmental requirements into account, including switching from diesel to electric power.

The cranes are also equipped with the latest GPS-assisted technology for container yards. This includes the autosteering feature, which keeps the crane on a pre-programmed straight driving path, thus improving safety and increasing productivity.

The RTG container positioning system is connected to the port's terminal operating system, ensuring correct, real-time container positioning and maintaining accuracy in inventory.

Mr Pearson says the operators will go through a full training programme and he expects the RTGs to be in full operation by the end of September.

DSV steps up graduate recruitment for sales positions

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 18, 2011 - DSV Road and DSV Solutions in the UK have just completed their first recruitment programme aimed at graduates.  They were so impressed with the calibre of the candidates that they have selected 12 graduates, increasing the sales team by 40%.

"We were initially offering six positions, but decided to increase that after seeing the high quality of the candidates at the assessment day," explains Chris Malyon, Director Sales and Marketing. Ten of the graduates were taken on by DSV Road with the other two joining DSV Solutions.

Mr Malyon explains that the subject of a candidate's degree was not the most crucial criteria for selection. "We are looking for people who understand how to relate well to clients and potential clients – listening to them and being able to assess their requirements and needs." manual trash compactor

Some of the 12 graduates are filling existing vacancies, while new roles are created for the others. "We are focussing on organic growth which is key to our success in this area, and a catalyst for future success. We are sure that these graduates will develop into top sales people," says Mr Malyon.

DSV worked with the recruitment agency Pareto Law, a graduate sales specialist, which selected 45 potential candidates for the assessment day.

The graduates, who begin working at DSV in September, will be given 13 days training by Pareto as well as immediate inclusion in the DSV Sales Academy. They will be taught all aspects of sales, such as presentation skills, client-needs analysis and booking meetings.

DSV Road , which is the third largest road freight operator in Europe,  has been focussing on people development and sales training over the last few months, establishing a Sales Academy for existing staff and designing new programmes for apprentices.

Mr Malyon says: "We have looked carefully at our client base and seen there is a lot of potential to offer more of our services to many of our existing clients, so we are building better processes to make sure we can trash bins identify that potential, as well as winning new rc helicopter market place clients."

Gold is a classic safe haven, partly because it's less affected by government policies than stocks and currencies are. Gold's value doesn't depend on whether countries can make their bond payments.

"American investors are more concerned about S&P's unprecedented rating downgrade than about any other single event in the past year," Hanlon said. "Our government debt problem has been building for a long time but the stock market's current slump reflects increased concern about just how the U.S. will repay its debt."

Meanwhile, interest in precious metals from the investing public and fund managers has only increased in the last several months. Investors have rushed to the safety of precious metals as the currencies and stock markets of most major, national economies struggle with debt and slow growth, Hanlon said. Continued tensions in the Middle East and North Africa have also sent foreign investors to gold.

"In my conversations with dealers, trust fund managers and others who handle precious metals Kenmore Bisque 15 inchi in IRAs, I've been told that precious metals in huge volumes are being added to accounts," Hanlon said. Precious metals tend to rise when other markets slide, making metals a needed insurance policy, he noted. Even the most conservative analysts see gold at $1,800 a troy ounce in the short term, while others look for an eventual target of $2,000 a troy ounce, Hanlon said. At times, we see hiccups in gold's climb, he noted. But those setbacks are often the result of funds or pooled money taking profits in metals to offset losses in other investments, he said.

"In today's turbulent markets, people are trying to figure out how to operate," Hanlon said. "I expect gold's higher trend to continue, at least until decent decisions are made about U.S. government spending--which has greatly exceeded revenue for years."

The physical side of the business, including investors buying coins and bars and manufacturers using gold, remains strong. "Physical metal is a liquid asset which can be traded worldwide, and all major government mints are experiencing record gold sales," Hanlon said.

Global gold demand in the first quarter of 2011 was 981 tons, up 11 percent from first-quarter 2010, the World Gold Council said in May, citing demand for bars and coins and Chinese and Indian jewelry needs.

The world's, first-quarter gold supplies shrank by 4 percent year-on-year to 872.2 tons from first quarter 2010, despite an increase in mine production. Smaller supplies were attributed to a 6 percent decline in recycled gold versus a year earlier, and to a sharp increase in central bank purchases--which jumped in the first quarter.
