"Algeria Petrochemicals Report Q3 2011" is now available at Fast Market Research

The start-up date of the 1mn tpa methanol complex planned by Sonatrach, to be built by a consortium of companies led by Kuwait's Qurain Petrochemical Industries Company (QPIC), has been pushed back to 2014. With 1.1mn tpa of ethylene production capacity and integrated downstream plants and low labour costs, the US$3bn petrochemical complex being built at Arzew should be more economic and efficient to run than smaller and often isolated European facilities.

In the Middle East and Africa Petrochemicals Business Environment Ratings, Algeria is in 10th place with an overall score of 39.5 points, 0.2 up on the previous quarter due to an improvement in its long-term score for structural characteristics of the economy. It lies 7.6 points behind Turkey and 8.7 points ahead of Nigeria. Meanwhile, its petrochemicals-specific scores are benefitting from progress on the Arzew petrochemicals complex, although delays are undermining the country's petrochemicals market risk score. On nearly every indicator, Algeria comes last by a long margin, expect when Nigeria scores worse, and this is likely to remain the situation until the Arzew complex comes onstream.

The big fall in exports pulled the country's trade balance into a deficit of 463.7bn yen ($5.6bn ; £3.5bn) last month.

The deficit was smaller than economists had expected.

Japan's imports surged by 8.9% in April from a year earlier, reflecting higher prices for commodities.

The natural disasters left more than 24,000 people dead or missing.

Key features include reverse input voltage protection, over voltage protection, permanent short circuit protection and inrush current limitation. Operating temperature range is -40º to +70ºC without derating. Outputs can be specified between 5 and 110Vdc and the units have a footprint of just 135 x 85mm including the mounting plate. With efficiencies approaching 90%, the conduction cooled versions help to minimize any temperature rise within the host equipment.

As a business that relies heavily on communications in order to process customer transactions, working with a managed service provider that responds quickly to any issues with network performance or availability is crucial to R&M's continued success. Unfortunately, this had not been the company's recent experience.

"Most of our remote sites have business critical applications connecting to head office," said Mark Stone, group IT manager for R&M Electrical. "We were having days of sites not being able to process any transactions because the circuits were down and we couldn't get a response from our service provider."

As a long term user of BT's IP Clear network, Mark decided to contact BT for advice.

"Apart from the issues we were having with our service provider, we also wanted to introduce some new database applications which would need more bandwidth and class of service, so this was an opportunity to address both requirements at the same time," said Mark.

BT suggested an introduction to the SAS Group, a specialist in managed and professional services who could help R&M with the design, installation and support of its network.& helicop ter technology #13;

"I was sceptical at first, we had had our fair share of third party managed service providers," said Mark. "But once I'd met SAS, I felt reassured; SAS had all the answers I wanted and hearing the BT engineers say that SAS was superb was really enough."

To kick off the project, the SAS Group provided technical design authority for a new IP Clear MPLS network based on BT's 21CN technology and, together with R&M, designed a failover network using an existing LES circuit at the company's disaster recovery site. The SAS Group also provided a team of engineers for the installation and configuration of the Cisco routers terminating each circuit.

Since completing the installation of R&M's new network, the SAS Group has taken on responsibility for managing and supporting the infrastructure, including the provision of a single point of contact for any faults, MACs or billing issues on the company's network estate, and detailed performance stats for planning and development.

"We're really getting the proactive support we wanted now," said Mark. "SAS is monitoring our lines 24/7 so if one of our sites goes down at the weekend I'll get a phone call and I can take immediate action to correct it."

"With SAS and BT, we've got better support, better response times and a faster network –all at a lower cost," said Mark.

New Market Research Report: Bahrain Water Report Q2 2011

PRLog (Press Release) – May 08, 2011 – Bahrain receives groundwater by lateral under-flow from the Dammam aquifer, which is part of an extensive regional system. Excessive extraction from this aquifer has led to supplies having an increased saline content because water is drawn from adjacent brackish and saline water sources.

More than half of the country's water is provided by the Hidd independent water and power plant (IWPP), with just 9% of supply for consumption provided by ground water in 2011. Desalinated water now accounts helicop ter technology for more than 80% of Bahrain's water provision, a proportion that is likely to increase over time.

Desalinated water capacity has increased significantly since 2009 with the commissioning of the third phase of the Hidd Power Company desalination plant, which has raised output to 90mn gallons a day (g/d) - an increase of 60mn g/d over its previous capacity.

The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA rc helic trash bins opter market place ) is the agency responsible for the production and supply of power and water in Bahrain, working as an independent arm of the state. It has successfully pushed for the development of IWPPs via the third phase of Hidd's desalination plant and the award of the Al Dur IWPP contract.

The kingdom has also drafted a national policy for wastewater, including the reuse of treated sewage effluence. A major boost to wastewater treatment capacity will come with the development of the Muharraq wastewater plant, which will have a capacity of 100,000m3 per day (m3/d).

The EWA has also made improvements in order to increase sanitation and sewage connection coverage to 88% of the island's population, and is on target to reach full coverage by 2015.

The EWA is also looking to award a consultancy contract for a water transmission development scheme which will add 165km of new pipelines, which will carry an extra 48mn g/d of water produced from the Al Dur IWPP. The government is now looking to ramp up the private-led development of Bahrain's water sector, making the investment climate even more business-friendly.

The Muharraq sewage treatment plant is the first major example of the country's privatisation efforts and to ensure its success, the government has guaranteed effluent supplies and has assured companies operating the plant that it will take all of the treated water. The Public Works Ministry awarded the contract to a consortium comprising Korea's Samsung Engineering, with the UK-based United Utilities International and the UAE's Invest AD. The consortium - which beat five other bidders - will build, own and operate (BOO) a new 100,000 m3/day sewage treatment plant and a 15km-deep gravity sewer conveyance system in Muharraq - under a 27-year sewage treatment agreement.

Bahrain is also persevering with small scale desalination schemes. In September 2010, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry approved plans for a new US$18mn desalination plant, which will have a 3.5mn litre capacity and will be located at the Arab Ship Repair Yard in Hidd. The planned reverse osmosis (RO) seawater plant will be built by India's Gemsil Engineering & Management Company. There are also plans for wind-powered desalination projects in Bahrain.

The kingdom's progress in bringing new desalination capacity on stream will enable it to keep a handle on water demand over the forecast period. Though groundwater output will be well down on its 2010 peak of 10.5bn gallons over the next four years, we envisage a small increase in production that will keep its contribution to overall water supplies at just over 10%.

Bahrain's main existing wastewater treatment plant is at Tubli, servicing the Manama area. It has the capacity to process 160,000m3/d of secondary treated effluence. Given excessive hydraulic overloading, the quality of treated effluent at Tubli has declined markedly. The Ministry of Work planned to expand the plant under a new design and build contract, increasing capacity to 350,000m3/d. However, the ministry has changed tack, and now plans to build a greenfield plant rather than overhaul Tubli.

Margins are being squeezed by high costs, notably in raw materials and energy.

Despite the challenges, Brazilian steelmakers continue to enjoy higher rates of output with a notable recovery in long steel output in Q111, although crude output is still 5% below full potential and producers were facing a squeeze on margins due to import prices. For the first two months of 2011, Brazil's crude steel output rose 8.0% year-on-year (y-o-y) reaching 5.55mn tonnes, while its rolled steel output increased by 5% to 4.05mn tonne trash bins s, including 2.44mn tonnes of flat products (up 5.6%) and 1.61mn tonnes of long products (up 4.1%).

Conditions will remain challenging for industry players throughout 2011 due to over-capacity, high costs of iron ore and scrap and limited pricing power in segments such as steel products used for the auto sector. The key drivers of growth in 2010, investment and private consumption, are likely to cool in 2011 as monetary and fiscal stimulus measures are withdrawn, with a knock-on effect on sales volumes. As such, BMI forecasts domestic finished steel consumption growing by a more modest 7.0% to 25.65mn tonnes in 2011, compared with the 27.3% growth estimated in 2010. Meanwhile, protectionist measures will not prevent a 16.3% rise in imports to 5.69mn tonnes, an upward revision from the 4.55mn tonnes previously forecast, due to the continued strength of the real. We expect the intervention of minimum pricing and domestic market expansion to support output growth over the medium term, leading to crude steel output of 46.22mn tonnes and hot-rolled output of 35.51mn tonnes by 2015, up 45% and 52% on respective 2010 levels.

Production in the aluminium sector remained flat in 2010 despite a 28.5% y-o-y rise in consumption of aluminium fabricated products to 1.3mn tonnes, 100,000 tonnes above the forecast by industry body Abal. Brazilian primary aluminium production reached 1.54mn tonnes, up just 0.1% y-o-y and well down on the 1.63mn tonnes in 2008. Most smelters saw output stagnate or decline slightly. This was outweighed by a 35.1% rise in output at Alcoa's Pocos de Caldas smelter to 88,200 tonnes. The planned closure of Novelis's aluminium smelter in Aratu will remove 60,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of capacity, although BMI does not believe this will have a major effect on overall Brazilian output. The smelter, which is small and outdated by global standards, was closed after ramping up losses. The closure came over a year after the closure of Valesul's 94,000tpa smelter due to high energy prices. Smelter closures are related to the rising cost of energy and an influx of imports from China. BMI believes Brazilian aluminium production will come under assault from a combination of cheap imports, exacerbated by the strength of the real, over the medium term. Cheaper imports are taking up more local demand growth, which could rise by a further 9% in 2011. In order to halt the decline in domestic production, Abal has called for action against imports from China in the form of tariffs to counter the 12-15% export rebate Chinese aluminium exporters enjoy.

New Market Research Report: Turkey Oil & Gas Report Q2 2011

PRLog (Press Release) – May 06, 2011 – The latest Turkey Oil & Gas Report from BMI forecasts that the country will account for 10.89% of Central and Eastern European (CEE) regional oil demand by 2015, while making no meaningful contribution to supply. CEE regional oil use of 5.42mn barrels per day (b/d) in 2001 rose to an estimated 6.09mn b/d in 2010. It should increase to around 6.93mn b/d by 2015. Regional oil production was 8.89mn b/d in 2001 and in 2010 averaged an estimated 13.78mn b/d. It is set to rise to 15.08mn b/d by 2015. Oil exports are growing steadily, because demand growth is lagging the pace of supply expansion. In 2001, the region was exporting an average of 3.47mn b/d. This total rose to an estimated 7.69mn b/d in 2010 and is forecast to reach 8.15mn b/d by 2015. Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have the greatest production growth potential, although Russia will remain the most important exporter.

In terms of natural gas, the region in 2010 consumed an estimated 636.3bn cubic metres (bcm), with demand of 736.3bcm targeted for 2015, representing 15.7% growth. Production of an estimated 787.9bcm in 2010 should reach 954.2bcm in 2015, which implies net exports rising from an estimated 151.6bcm in 2010 to 217.9bcm by the end of the period. Turkey's share of gas consumption in 2010 was an estimated 5.34%, while it makes no meaningful contribution to production. By 2015, its share of demand is forecast to be 6.79%.

The 2010 full-year outturn was US$77.45/bbl for OPEC crude, which delivered an average for North Sea Brent of US$80.34/bbl and for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) of US$79.61/bbl. The BMI price target of US$77 was reached thanks to the early onset of particularly cold weather, which drove up demand for and the price of heating oil during the closing weeks of the year.

We set our 2011 supply, demand and price forecasts in early January, targeting global oil demand growth of 1.53% and supply growth of 1.91%. With OECD inventories at the trash bins top of their five-year average range, we set a price forecast of US$80/bbl average for the OPEC basket in 2011. The unprecedented wave of popular uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) that followed the removal of Tunisian President Ben Ali on January 14 has obviously fundamentally altered our outlook, particularly since the unrest spread to Libya in mid-February.

Taking into account the risk premium that has been added to crude prices in response to actual and perceived threats to supply, we have now raised our benchmark OPEC basket price forecast from US$80 to US$90/bbl for 2011 and from US$85 to US$95/bbl for 2012. Based on our expectations for differentials, this gives a forecast for Brent at US$94/bbl in 2011 and US$99/bbl in 2012. We have kept our long-term price assumption of US$90/bbl (OPEC basket) in place for the time being while we wait to see what path events in the MENA region take. We have also retained our existing supply and demand forecasts until the scheduled quarterly revision at the start of April.

Turkish GDP rose by an estimated 7.9% in 2010. We are forecasting average annual growth of 4.9% in 2011-2015. We expect oil demand to rise from an estimated 640,000b/d in 2010 to 755,000b/d in 2015. State upstream company TPAO and some international oil companies (IOCs) are attempting to raise domestic oil output, but our estimates assume 55,000b/d of oil and liquids production in 2010, sinking to 44,000b/d by the end of the forecast period. Imports therefore rise from an estimated 585,000b/d to 711,000b/d. Gas production will remain insignificant, but consumption is expected to rise from an estimated 34bcm to 50bcm by the end of the forecast period, requiring imports of 48bcm.

Between 2010 and 2020 we forecast an increase in Turkish oil consumption of 32.8%, with demand rising steadily from an estimated 640,000b/d to 850,000b/d by the end of the 10-year forecast period. Refining capacity between 2010 and 2020 is set to increase by 164.8%, reaching 1.62mn b/d by 2020. Gas consumption is expected to climb from Kenmore Bisque 15 inchi an estimated 34bcm to 62bcm, depending largely on imports. LNG imports are expected to virtually double from an estimated 6.5bcm to 12.0bcm during the forecast period. Details of BMI's 10-year forecasts can be found in the appendix to this report.

Turkey now shares third place with Poland in BMI's composite Business Environment (BE) ratings table, which combines upstream and downstream scores. It is ranked fourth, behind Poland, in BMI's updated upstream Business Environment ratings, in spite of the virtually non-existent oil and gas resource base. Russia is just two points behind and likely to challenge Turkey over the near term. Turkey's score reflects an established licensing framework and largely encouraging country risk factors. Turkey is now joint first, alongside Russia and ahead of Poland, in BMI's updated downstream Business Environment ratings, with several high scores but some longer-term threat from Poland below. It shares a score of 61 points with Russia, thanks largely to high scores for oil demand, retail site intensity, non-state competition, deregulation and nominal GDP.
