Leaders In Labor, Manufacturing and Government Confront Workforce Issues
Chicago, IL, March 31, 2011. America's top leaders in labor, manufacturing and government will gather at the Local 597 pipefitters' state-of-the-art training center outside Chicago to confront the challenges facing the U.S. as we work to restore our once-powerful manufacturing base, in particular the creation of a 21st century workforce. Illinois Governor Patrick Quinn will welcome participants from the President's Export Council, the Department of Labor, the National Association of Manufacturers, and corporate leaders to this groundbreaking program. During the course of an intense day, participants will discuss what America must do to garbage compactor review regain its place as a dynamic force in the global economy. Topics include: • Shortfalls in high school preparation for the job market • Spotlight on education: Apprenticeship programs, community colleges, advanced technical degrees • Reaching underserviced segments of the workforce: Vet helicopter technology erans, Native Americans, dislocated workers Among the questions the group will tackle are identifying the major obstacles to workforce readiness and what trends are affecting American manufacturing capabilities, what is necessary for success and what needs to in order for America to meet President Obama's goal of doubling exports by 2014. From this meeting will emerge a framework for a plan that will address the issues raised, and it is expected that this conference will contribute to an overall program for reversing the decline in the U.S. manufacturing base that has taken place over the past several decades. William P. Hite, General President of the United Association of Plumbers, Pipefitters, Sprinklerfitters and HVAC/R Service Technicians which is hosting the event, will chair the conference. In attendance will be officials from the Department of Labor, Senior National Association of Manufacturers Official Emily DeRocco, Enterprise Company CEO Dick Starr, Dave Siravo of Owens Community College, and other leaders from business, labor and government. It is expected that officials of such companies as Archers Daniel Midland (ADM), Xerox and Vermeer will also be in attendance.
